For this project, I looked into the Annexation of the Hawaiian Islands. First discovered and founded by the men of Bora Bora, the islands in the middle of the Pacific ocean known as Hawaii are filled with a rich history. Life on the islands remained very much the same for hundreds or years until they were discovered by those of the western world, and soon after became a hotspot for whalers and trade. They brought the wonders of modern technology with them, but also eventually led to the eventual downfall of the nation. In 1893, a coup led by Sanford B. Dole was held against the Hawaiian monarchy. This lead to the eventual annexation of Hawaii into the 50th state. I decided I would look further into the reasons and motivations behind the coup, and based my project around that.
Song
After analyzing the history and context behind this event, I took the information I gathered and turned it into a song. The lyrics explain the reasons behind the overthrow of the monarchy and how it ties into events we see today. My art piece was to perform my song as well as an original piece by the last Hawaiian monarch for reference when writing my new song. For history, I went through my song and annotated it, explaining where the inspiration came from for the different portions. The videos can be found below, as well as pdf's for my lyrics an annotation.
