Art
For my art piece, I made a collage expressing the state of weapons of mass destruction in contemporary society. Starting in the top right, we see a blue print. The blue print is of an old German chemical manufacturing plant that created chemical warfare agents in the 20th century. Moving clockwise we then see a native American and white man shaking hands with the text, "I will love to be called a foolish man of peace than to be named a wise man of war." The two men are from an album cover by the group known as Gang of Four, and its original meaning was about the push of capitalism and the ruthless extent people will go to for success. The text above it was a quote from a pastor during the civil rights movement, and it shows how although the Native American man may be a fool, he is still a man of peace and honor which is preferable to the white man of war. In the bottom left there is a plane spreading the chemical agent orange, a dangerous herbicide that was designed to destroy the thick jungle in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. This
History
For the history portion of my project I carried out a series of unpleasant but supposedly healthy activities in order test the philosophy of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. I wanted to see if subjecting my self to painful and unpleasant experiences if I would truly emerge on the other side feeling a more accomplished person. Parts of the challenge included getting up early for morning runs, taking cold showers, cutting out caffeine, and other types of activities. As I was coping with the challenges that arose while I worked on my challenge, I tried to keep in mind the teachings and philosophy of Nietzsche to help keep me motivated. A detailed reflection of my experience can be found below.
